MAGBa: Mostra d’Art Generatiu de Barcelona 2024

The Escoleta building hosts MAGBa, Barcelona's Generative Art Exhibition, where nine artists present their creations through the use of algorithms and chance as a means of artistic expression.

In the space, each artist presents a recent work of their own representative of their artistic practice. Through instructions in the form of code, some artists obtain landscape or naturalistic representations, others play with light and color, but we also find complex compositions through the simplest geometries or even automatic growth algorithms cellular. At MAGBa we find all these works in digital format and they are iteratively displayed showing the viewer the variety of each of the algorithms presented.

Despite having nothing to do with it, there are often those who confuse it with artificial intelligence. Of those who know it, few know how to explain how it is created and what is the role of the artist in the final result.

"With MAGBa, we want to highlight an artistic movement that has experienced a renaissance in recent years on a global scale and we want to do it from a local point of view and with a clearly pedagogical and visually demonstrative intention".

True to The Generative Art Museum ethos, we proudly support this event by helping artists with the required resources for the exhibition. Amongst our goals as an association based in Barcelona, we aim to guide and facilitate conversations, meetings, events and whatsoever in the generative art or creative coding scene, by directly organising (Responsive Dreams or Sonar) or supporting events like this. The Artists

Anna Carreras

I am interested in using algorithms to paint works that speak of everyday experiences. And which, at the same time, open up questions about broad concepts of our environment and complex universe.

Daniel Aguilar

I feel like creative programming is like a huge playroom, full of wacky contraptions that I can not only use as they are, but also take apart and recombine to surprise me every time. A directed and discovery process in equal parts.

Daniel Julià

Ever since I learned to program I've always enjoyed experimenting with code, especially drawing with JavaScript. Programming allows me to create lines and colors like a pencil, taking advantage of the speed and infinite variations of the computer.

Eliza Struthers-Jobin

Fascinated by the influence that programming and algorithmic thinking have on the creative process, I have been creating artwork with code since 2015. My work is experimental, meditative and rhythmic, motivated by a continuous cycle of exploration and discovery.

Heeey

Combining my experience as an architect and programmer, I create generative art systems that, through color progressions, lines and simple geometric shapes, delve into singular concepts.

Luis E. Fraguada

I use code to create art and interrogate reality. My artistic practice includes interactive public installations, wearable computing, and audiovisual generative art.

mekhno / Marc L Clapers

I understand code as a current artistic medium that allows the creation of works in space and time. My work tends to be minimalist and abstract, with a strong symbolic and conceptual component. Experimenting with penplotters allows me to transfer to the physical world everything created in the black mirror.

Paolo Curtoni

Personally, I see programming as the construction of entities with a life of their own, through a dialogue between creator and creation. In my works, I often try to take the viewer with me towards the surprise of an unforeseen intuition.
