Creative Coding Barcelona with Mario Santamaria presents "Trained Shadows"

By Creative Coding Barcelona

The Generative Art Museum presented a new edition of Creative Coding Barcelona featuring Mario Santamaría, who shared his artistic processes and practice. For years, his work focused on embodying protocols and processes of information distribution, performing actions such as physically travelling to his website by repeating the path of data; leaving an avatar falling for eternity in the sky of a Metaverse; going for drinks around the city as a Google algorithm; or creating a tour operator based on the infrastructure of the Internet.

Mario Santamaría is an artist who works with one of the most omnipresent materials of our time, and paradoxically one of the most invisible: the Internet. Based in Barcelona, his practice moves between installation, performance, and research, engaging in what could be described as a kind of network archaeology. Rather than focusing on what appears on the screen, his work turns attention to everything that makes the screen possible: submarine cables, data centers, protocols, latencies, and algorithms, the physical and political infrastructure that underpins what we call “the cloud.”

In projects like Travel to My Website, Santamaría physically traveled from his home in Barcelona to the server hosting his website, following the same route as his own data packets. What typically takes milliseconds became a 14-day journey, turning the functioning of the Internet into a lived, embodied experience.

Through works like this, as well as initiatives such as Internet Tour, he invites us to see the network not as an abstraction, but as a territory that can be traversed, intervened in, and questioned. On this conversation, he explores everything we don’t usually see, but that connects it all.
