Bringing Generative Art to the Streets: A Collaborative Mural in Barcelona
On Saturday, February 1, 2025, the streets of Granollers (Barcelona) will witness a unique artistic activation: a collaborative mural painting based on a generative artwork by Anna Lucia, titled "Art for Walls in Public Spaces". This event, taking place at Roca Umbert Fàbrica de les Arts, invites the community—especially kids—to participate in the physical realization of a digital art piece, offering a rare opportunity to experience generative art beyond the screen.
Art For Walls In Public Spaces is a long-form generative art project that uses an algorithm to create unique variations. This approach reflects how generative art can create endless visual possibilities from a structured system, much like nature itself. “Moving inanimate drawings generated with code” encapsulates Anna Lucia’s artistic process—one that often begins with multiple sketches, evolving organically as elements from different ideas merge into something new.
The project takes inspiration from Brian Eno’s album Music for Airports. Eno sought to create music as an ambient experience, stating that ambient music should be "as ignorable as it is interesting." His approach involved overlapping tape loops of different lengths, producing ever-changing soundscapes. Anna Lucia applies a similar generative philosophy to her visual art—creating dynamic, evolving compositions that function as both standalone pieces and elements of a larger system.
Generative art is often associated with screens, code, and digital marketplaces, but this project challenges that perception. By translating a generative artwork into a physical mural, the activation aims to showcase contemporary digital art in public spaces, engage the community in the creative process, and highlight the connection between generative systems and traditional mural painting.
Unlike traditional murals painted by a single artist or team, this piece is designed to be co-created with the public. Anyone, regardless of artistic background, is encouraged to participate. Special attention will be given to children, fostering creativity and curiosity about generative art from a young age. Participants will follow a curated composition, ensuring the integrity of the original generative artwork while embracing the organic spontaneity of a community-driven mural. The result will be a fusion of algorithmic precision and human touch, an artwork that is both structured and unpredictable—just like generative art itself.
This activation is more than just a mural; it's a statement about how public spaces can serve as platforms for contemporary art. In an era where digital art is often confined to screens and NFT marketplaces, this project reclaims the physical world as a space for artistic expression. It also highlights how cities can integrate generative art into their visual landscape, sparking conversations about its role in the future of urban culture.
Whether you’re an artist, a generative art enthusiast, or simply curious about this innovative approach, everyone is welcome to participate. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to be part of something creative and communal.
